Hawaii, 1940. Softcover. Very Good. Oblong small quarto measuring 11" x 7". String-tied brown leather over stiff paper boards with "Snap Shots Diamond Head Aloha Honolulu" and a beach illustration on the front board. Contains 49 sepia-toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring between 2.75" x 4.5" and 5" x 7" without captions. Very good album with waviness and edgewear with fine photographs.
A photo album compiled by an amateur photographer who appears to have been stationed in Hawaii and California during World War II. The album is a mix of commercial photography and the compiler's beginning with images of young Hawaiian women in traditional dress posed in pin-up style poses some with ukuleles and others with leis and grass skirts. These are followed by action shots of Hawaiian women dancing and luaus. Other images show palm trees, sunsets, surfers, beach scenes, and other quintessential Hawaii imagery. A later photo shows a Pan American Airlines plane docked with a formation of aircraft flying overhead, another photo shows men in Navy uniforms walking on a street. Also featured are local fisherman working and people picking bananas. One photo towards the end shows a topless Hawaiian woman in a grass skirt and lei.
