The novel was a best-seller, and the subject matter made its adaptation into a stage musical a natural; the Kern-Hammerstein musical opened on Broadway in December 1927 and ran for a year and a half; the first, mostly-silent version went into release in 1929, followed by full musical (talkie) adaptations in 1936 and 1951. .
