[Photo Album]: 1940s Amateur Photography
- Hardcover
- New York , 1943
New York, 1943. Hardcover. Near Fine. Quarto measuring 9.5" x 11.5". Olive green cloth over stiff paper boards, three-ring binder style album. Contains 96 black and white or sepia toned gelatin silver photographs most measuring 5" x 7" with some captions. Very good album with rubbing, toning, and some detached pages with near fine photographs.
A photo album kept by a New York woman in the early 1940s. The album is filled with amateur photography from someone who was clearly trying to perfect her art. It begins with images of the Hudson River with photos of boats, water sports, and the George Washington Bridge. She also features portraits of travelers on a boat, fashionably dressed men and women in suits and women in turbans. The city of New York is seen in one photo with the ocean liner the S.S. Normandie in the foreground. Following this they attend a clam bake at Indian Head Club with photos of the beach, people in a row boat, and the crowd of the club leisurely hanging around the beach. A well-composed photo of a napping boater is seen here and "Noll's Summer Home" which is an elaborate tent. Other photos show landscape viewed on trips, wild animals, and animals at the zoo. One section of photos includes portrait style images of women in fancy dress, one of which is smoking a cigarette and looking very Hollywood starlet. One particularly beautiful photo shows a winter night on a street lit by a street lamp.
A nice collection of images depicting life in 1940s New York through a woman's better than average amateur photography.
