Backstrip replaced, some repairs to wrappers at corners, a few chips and nicks at corners, normal aging and browning, light wear; otherwise very good. United States Geological and Geographical Survey of the Black Hills. Department of the Interior, Office of Indian Affairs, 1876. This report was based on earlier reports of the presence of gold in the Black Hills. Even General George A. Custer reported that there was gold in this area. Ironically, a couple of months after this report, Custer would meet his end at the Little Big Horn. See TheBlackHills website.
