David O. Selznick held the movie rights to Hardy's story for many years (with Jennifer Jones in mind for Tess). Selznick's two greatest dreams had been to film "Gone With the Wind" and "Tess of the D'Urber villes." He never fulfilled his second dream. At his death the rights to the novel remained in his estate.
