By Jones, H. (Henry) Stuart
Oxford: At the Clarendon Press, 1926. First edition. Hardcover. Very good/very good. 407pp. The text volume is an octavo [22.5 cm] and the plate volume is a folio [41 cm]. The text volume is bound in olive cloth over boards. With the publisher's dust jacket, which has periodic small losses from the edges (the largest loss is from the bottom edge of the rear panel, measuring 1 ½ by 1" deep). The accompanying plate volume, with 124 plates, is bound in 1/4 olive green cloth with printed green paper over boards, and the title in gilt on the backstrip. The pastedowns each have bookplates, and there is a brief notation in pen on the first preface page of the text volume. The plate volume, which is an ex-library reference copy with very few markings, is rubbed at the extremities, has a slightly weak front hinge, and has a 2" tape repair to the fore-edge margin of the front free endpaper. There is also a previous owner's discreet blind stamp on the title page. May require extra postage due to weight. An original edition of the second volume of A Catalogue of Ancient Sculptures Preserved in the Municipal Collections of Rome, which was reprinted in 1968. The illustrations in this volume were prepared from stripped negatives supplied to the Clarendon Press, rather than from prints, as in the first volume. The editor, whose focus was strong in all branches of classical studies, including Greek music, was president of the Society for the Promotion of Roman Studies from 1926 to 1929, and was knighted in 1933. Original editions of this work are scarce.
