6 leaves, handwritten legal document in the County of San Augustine in the district court presided over by Royall T. Wheeler, also with Samuel Davis, sheriff, and Robert W. Martin, Clerk. The case was to secure payment for a debt owed to James M. Johnson, who complains that James Perkins had failed to pay the debt. Judge Wheeler was over the Fifth Judicial District. Besides being the founding head of the first founding of the Baylor Law School in 1857, he became the Chief Justice of the Texas Supreme Court in 1858. Saddened by the impending defeat of the South in the Civil War, he committed suicide on April 9, 1864, in Washington County, Texas.
