THE TIMES. PLATES I AND II
Very Good binding. Both plates of "The Times", which were originally painted and subsequently engraved by William Hogarth. Neatly framed in black with gilt fillets. Pages in protective sleeves from the 19th century book, Hogarth's Works... by John Trusler and E. F. Roberts are attached to the rear of the frames, describing and identifying the plate in question. "The Times" were a surprisingly overt and uncharacteristically political set of works by Hogarth, which support the King in his drive for peace during the Seven Years War against France. Plate I shows the leader of the House of Commons literally fanning the flames of war, as well as the Lord Mayor of London advertising slaves and tobacco from the colonies. Plate II shows the alternative, with King George III presiding over a veritable garden of peace, with his political opponents in the pillory and all right in the world. Very Good binding.
