Hanson was a social reformer who was imprisoned and fined for his efforts to institute a minimum wage and the right to bargain, among other reforms, for the weavers of Manchester. Considered a dangerous man by the authorities, he was charged with sedition. Known as "the weaver's Friend," 39,600 people contributed one penny each to his defence fund.
