First Editions of two works by Robert Jenkin, bound together, both published by Smith and Walford in 1702. Jenkin served as an English clergyman and later master of St. John's College. An Account of the Life of Apollonius Tyaneus and A Brief Confutation of the Pretences against Natural and Revealed Religion, in one volume. Apollonius was translated by Jenkin from Louis-Sebastien Le Nain de Tillemont's Histoire des Empereurs, vol. II; an ecclesiastical historian, Le Nain was one of the first historians to provide critical surveys of the full range of ancient Roman source material, and was often cited in Gobbon's Decline and Fall. A Brief Confutation is in two parts, with continuous pagination and a divisional title page; "A Brief Confutation of Atheism," and "A Brief Confutation of Deism." Collates complete; [2], xxiv, [4], 88, [4] pp. & [8], 83, [5] pp. with publisher's advertisements bound in at the rear, as called for by the ESTC.
