The front board is splaying, and the bottom corner of the jacket's front flap has been clipped. Harlin Quist was a Minnesota born American publisher remembered for his fresh, artistic contributions to the field of children's literature. He produced over sixty books, working predominantly with French authors and illustrators, bringing their books to an American market and winning an award in France for his achievements as a European publisher.
'Shhh!' was published towards the end of Quist's golden age, existing on the cusp between the large, lush works that he produced and the smaller and less impressive works that followed. It is inspired by Rene Magritte.
