The card is to be positions so the A flap faces the sun to create a shadow line. If properly aligned the string will point to the correct time of day. Unfortunately the device can only be used with sun light. Reverse is blank except for patent information. Also includes two fold instruction sheet and original slip case with applied label reading "European Pocket Time-keeper
