Zurich: Limmat Verlag, 1965. First edition. Hardcover. Very good/very good. Quarto [28 cm] Gray cloth over thin boards, with very light warping to the front board. In a dust jacket illustrated by Masereel, with subtle toning (more so at the spine), and very sporadic small chips and closed tears to the edges, one of which has been backed with a short piece of tape. The most prominent tear is closed, and measures just under 2" deep. Nonetheless, the jacket is rather attractive. Masereel's woodcut series, which were mainly of sociocritical content and of expressionistic formal concept, brought Masereel international acknowledgment. Among them were his so-called image novels including 'Passion eines Menschen,' 'Mein Stundenbuch,' 'Die Sonne,' 'Die Idee,' and 'Geschichte ohne Worte,' which all date from the 1920s. During this same time Masereel also drew illustrations for famous works of world literature by Thomas Mann, Emile Zola and Stefan Zweig.
