- California, Arizona , 1937
California, Arizona, 1937. Hardcover. Near Fine. Oblong quarto measuring 12" x 9.5". String-tied brown leather over stiff paper boards with stamped decorations. Contains 133 sepia-toned or black and white silver gelatin photographs measuring between .75" x 1.75" and 3.75" x 5.75" with captions. Very good album with fine photographs.
A family photo album compiled by a Kansas family between 1936 and 1937 documenting visits to California and Arizona. The images are not in chronological order but seem to have taken place over the year between 1936 and 37. It opens with women posed by cactuses in Arizona followed by Christmas in Long Beach, California. One of the Christmas photos shows a woman on a beach with the print cut into the shape of a Christmas tree. This is followed by a page detailing the 1937 Rose Bowl parade in Pasadena with images of floats and participants including Lynwood Cameos and the Water District. They also photographs the shoreline of San Pedro, the caverns of Carlsbad, and the White Sands desert. After a break in the album the photos pick up with images of the family swimming at the beach, working on a farm, and flying planes. The planes are captioned "The Lear" and "The Eaglerock" and the images show them taking off, landing, and passengers loading on and off the plane with tongue-in-cheek captions such as "Oh, Floyd, that was great!" Another image shows a woman in full flying attire captioned "aviatrix." Other photos show inflight aerial photography of the family farm in Santanta, Kansas and the surrounding land.
An interesting collection of images detailing a Kansas family's trip to the west coast and their aviation excursions.
