By Gabriel Gobron
Paris: Dervy, 1949. Original wraps. Near Fine. Very uncommon 1949 study of "Caodaism, or Cao Dai. literally meaning high palace or Kingdom of Heaven. In its Vietnamese form, the term Cao Dai is the name of God. The religious center of Caodaism is Tay Ninh in Vietnam." Limited to only 50 copies, this being #4 of "25 exemplaires sur papier Velin Crevecoeur des Papeteries du Marais" There is also an additional "25 exemplaires sur papier Velin Alfama". This copy also includes the Saigon business card of the "Commandant en Chef des Troupes Cadoaistes" tipped into the dedication page, along with his 1950 handwritten inscription ( in "respectueux hommages") to Monsieur Jessup, the American ambassador to Vietnam. A clean, very sharp copy to boot. Bright and Near Fine in its original off-white wrappers, with very mild darkening along the spine. Octavo, uncut signatures. Crisp, well-captioned black-and-white plates thruout. A scarce early study by the French of Vietnamese Buddism and Spiritualism, eerily prescient in its connection --thru this presentation to the American ambassador-- to The United States.
