A promotional brochure advertising both the famed theater's first membership season (1964-65) and the world premiere of Robert Lowell's play The *Old Glory*, directed by Jonathan Miller.
The Old Glory was the first full play hosted by the membership-financed American Theater, who counted Tennessee Williams and Myrna Loy as founding Trustees. In addition to advertising Lowell's play, the brochure gives a good deal of information on the theater's philosophy, structure, and price points for potential members. (Membership for the 1964-65 season, including two tickets to The Old Glory and every other event, was $100.) The American Place Theatre would go on to produce plays by a stunning number of American writers of note, including an early commitment to plays by African-American writers and playwrights in the early 1960's. A scarce and ephemeral piece illustrating the beginnings of a major New York theater.
