By Charles Stuart Pratt
Boston: D. Lothrop Company, 1886. Pictorial boards. Very Good +/Very Good. Childe Hassam. The 1886 1st edition, IN ITS UNCOMMON DUSTJACKET. Tight and VG+ (light bumping to the front panel's upper tip) in its lovely, decorative panels. Neat, small 1888 inscription at the front free endpaper, otherwise clean as could be. And in a crisp, VG- to VG example of the fragile beige dustjacket, with light chipping along the spine ends and very light creasing and chipping to the panel edges. Thin octavo, beautiful chromolithographs --executed by G. H. Buek & Company of New York and inspired by the watercolors and margin decorations of Childe Hassam-- wonderfully complement the tender verse of Charles Stuart Pratt. "Hassam's most fully-realized achievement in book design, a highlight of 19th Century American color illustration" (Bready). 32 lithographs all told, representing some of Childe Hassam's earliest work in book illustration.
