Giovanna (Sophia Loren) and Antonio (Marcello Mastroianni) are newly weds torn from each other as Antonio is sent to the Russian front during World War II despite their efforts to avoid the war. When the war is over he is listed as MIA yet Giovanna believes he is alive and journeys to the Soviet Union to find her lover. Nominated for the Academy Award for Best Music.
