- 1800
1800. 10-3/4" x 8-3/4. 10-3/4" x 8-3/4" Unrecorded Broadside Warning Against Market Manipulation [Broadside]. Raine, J[onathan] [1763-1831]. Forestalling Ingrossing and Regrating. Alnwick: Printed by J. Catnach, 1800. 10-3/4" x 8-3/4" broadside, text in single column below headline. Signed "Jonn. Raine" in type from Alnwick Castle. Light toning, light soiling, two horizontal fold lines, a few minor stains, contemporary annotations (docket and sums) to verso with some show-through to recto. $1,000. * In his capacity as chairman of proceedings, Raine orders officers to proceed against anyone guilty of "forestalling, ingrossing" or "regrating," that is, manipulating market prices. The broadside states these practices "have of late become very prevalent, in Consequence of which, the Price of Provisions has been considerably enhanced, to the great Detriment of the Public in general, but of the poorer Orders of the Community in Particular." Its final paragraph states, perhaps as a warning, that these actions are, "by common law...highly criminal and punishable." Raine, the steward of the Court Leet of Alnwick, was an advisor to Hugh Percy, 2nd Duke of Northumberland. (The two met during Raine's time on the Northern Circuit, when this broadside was issued.) Thanks in part to this connection, he went on to a distinguished career as an MP, King's Counsel and treasurer of Lincoln's Inn. This broadside appears to be unrecorded.
