Japan, 1930. Hardcover. Very Good. Oblong small quarto measuring 9.5" x 6". String-tied brown cloth over stiff paper boards. Contains 61 black and white or sepia-toned photographs measuring between 2" x 3" and 5.5" x 7.5" with captions in Japanese. Very good album with worn edges with fine photographs.

A photo album presumably compiled by a man in the army in Japan in the 1930s. The album begins with portraits of the royal family with captions in Japanese. Following this are images of the Japanese military and Imperial Guard including cavalry, escorts for the royal family, and men standing at attention. Some of the most intriguing photos show the advancements in technology at the time. These images show the signal corps, men and animals in gasmasks, putting out fires, and men in tanks. One image shows a soldier working a large machine with cones that appears to be part of a signal corps. One image shows a group of men tailoring their uniforms, another captures a long outdoor mess hall. Towards the end of the album there are interior shots of the Imperial Palace and landscape photos. During this time in Japanese military history they were in conflict with China and the Soviet Union. The pervious decade had seen a rise in militarization which impacted Japanese foreign policy.

An interesting collection of photographs detailing the inter-war years of the Japanese army in the 1930s.
