By Lawrence W. Levine
New York: Oxford Univeristy Press, 1993. Very Good. New York: Oxford University Press, 1993. First Paperback Edition. Inscribed by author on half title: "For Bill & Harriett-With love-Larry." Octavo; xii + 372pp, including index. Coated, three-color, photographic card covers. Micro-peeling of coating at fore-edge of covers, front and back. Two inch vertical liquid stain, very narrow, at right bottom of front cover; minimal faint signs of that liquid having touched lower fore-edge of textblock, without seepage into pages. Textblock tight, square, unmarked, seemingly unread.

Levine, a student of Richard Hofstadter, was a prominent historian of U.S. multiculturalism and analysis across wide, previously neglected, demographic swaths before it was fashionable. The "Bill and Harriet" of the inscription are William L. Taylor and wife; Taylor was staff director of the United States Commission on Civil Rights in the mid-sixties, and helped to draft the 1964 Civil Rights Act, the 1965 Voting Rights Act, and the 1968 Fair Housing Act.
