Contemporary morocco, blind and gilt frames to boards, gilt title and ornaments to spine, "Presented by the Corporation of the City of Buffalo, to the Corporation of the City of [section of morocco below excised]" gilt-stamped to front board. Moderate rubbing to boards and extremities with wear to spine ends and corners, front board detached. Moderate toning, faint dampstaining to sections of text, light soiling and edgewear to preliminaries. $250. * Settled in the early 1800s, the town of Buffalo grew rapidly when it became the western terminus of the Erie Canal. It was incorporated as a city in 1832. This 1839 edition of the city charter and laws offers a legal perspective of what was then a boom town (with a large number of hard-playing canal and lake sailors). This appears to be the third printing of Buffalo's laws and the second of its charter in book form. The first collection was published in 1833. The second, which included the first printing of the charter, in 1835. OCLC locates 7 copies, 3 of them in Buffalo, 1 in a law library (Harvard). Not in Cohen or Sabin.
