Boston: Roberts Brothers, 1871. First American Edition. Octavo (ca. 21cm.); publisher's green gilt-lettered textured cloth; 56,8pp.; illus. throughout. Binding expertly recased and spine laid down, retaining original flyleaves; boards rubbed with some brief loss at corners, textblock rather finger-soiled, else Good and sound, retaining original ribbon bookmark with attached metal trinket embossed with the faces of Max and Maurice. A later owner (1958) has tipped to new rear endpapers four German postage stamps issued to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the death of Busch. This the first American edition, presumably unauthorized, of one of Busch's most successful juvenile works. BAL 1439 not noting this binding.
