Sacramento, 1857. Three partially printed receipts, completed in manuscript; two them measuring roughly 5 x 81⁄2 inches, the third measuring 7 x 8 inches. Accompanied by a related Wells, Fargo & Company check, dated at Folsom, 1864. A few light folds. One of the receipts a bit stained. Overall, very good. In a half morocco and cloth box. Three partially printed receipts, completed in manuscript; two them measuring roughly 5 x 81⁄2 inches, the third measuring 7 x 8 inches. Accompanied by a related Wells, Fargo & Company check, dated at Folsom, 1864. A nice grouping of receipts, showing the prices charged by the SACRAMENTO UNION Newspaper, Book and General Job Printing Establishment for printing and advertising services. Each of the receipts is made out to the American River Water and Mining Company. The receipt dated 1857 is for advertising "electing stockholders," as well as for advertising dividends and for job printing and binding. The 1858 and 1859 receipts are both for advertising services, and all three are marked as having been paid. The group is accompanied by a check drawn on Wells, Fargo & Company and dated at Folsom in 1864. The check pays James Anthony & Company, who appear to have been financial agents for the SACRAMENTO UNION, and is signed by C. Palmer, who was likely an officer of the American River Water and Mining Company. Interesting evidence of the business of newspaper advertising and printing services in California in the late 1850s.
