Philadelphia: The North American, 1909. 44 pp. 4to. Contemporary leather, gilt. Extremities worn. Modern bookplate on front pastedown; contemporary presentation inscription on front flyleaf. Internally clean. Very good. In a half morocco and cloth folder, spine gilt. 44 pp. 4to. Presentation copy of this series of letters reprinted from the Philadelphia NORTH AMERICAN, a newspaper edited by Edwin A. Van Valkenburg, discussing the mission of the newspaper and its editor. Van Valkenburg was a Progressive reformer who supported Theodore Roosevelt for president. The presentation inscription on the flyleaf is from Van Valkenburg to Gifford Pinchot (whose name is stamped in gilt on the cover), dated Feb. 12, 1910. Pinchot, then head of the U.S. Forest Service, was also a supporter of Roosevelt and would go on to become Governor of Pennsylvania. A nice association copy.
