Annie Grayson; or, Life in Washington

  • New York: Bunce & Brother, 1853
By N.P. Lasselle
New York: Bunce & Brother, 1853. Very Good. New York: Bunce & Brother, 1853. First Edition. 12mo; 345pp. Recased in later blue cloth with original blue and gilt-decorated cloth panels retained to front and back. Gilt page edges. Original cloth moderately scuffed, but gilt decoration is still clear and generally bright. Clean tape repair to original front free endpaper along gutter. Gift inscription "For Adelle C Welsh [?] from her father, July 13th 1854" on front pastedown, with some offsetting to front free endpaper. Pages toned throughout with light to moderate foxing. Pencil scribbles and marginal checks to a few pages, but text all legible. Binding is sound.

Lasselle writes in the brief preface that "The scenes portrayed, are not fancy sketches, but pictures drawn from life; the truthfulness of which, persons, familiar with Washington Society, will at once recognize. In portraying them, we have endeavored to impress upon the young mind, the danger of giving the heart up to a love of pleasure and outward display."
