Loyalty and Piety; or, The Christian's Civil Obligations Defined. A Discourse Preached in Trinity Church, Newport, R.I....on Thursday, July 21, 1842, the Day of Public Thanksgiving

By VINTON, Francis
Providence: Burnett & King, 1842. First Edition. Octavo (21.5cm.); removed; 23pp. A hint of dust-soil, else Very Good and fresh. Criticism of the 1841-2 Dorr Rebellion in Rhode Island, during which members of the middle class sought to extend the state's democracy by broadening the right to vote. "Sedition" as defined in Scripture according to Vinton "ranks in the class of 'the works of the flesh,' and denounced as a sin 'for which they who do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God'" (p. 11). Perhaps not surprisingly, Vinton's "military and legal training were in aid to him. He had a high estimate of authortity" (DAB).
