Van Upp began her career in Hollywood as a script reader and editor, gradually working her way up to become a screenwriter, agent, and casting director. At 43 she was named Executive Producer of Columbia Pictures, becoming one of the few woman producers in the film industry at the time. She was best known for producing and co-writing "Gilda" (1946).
