[no place: no publisher], 1959. Softcover. Very Good. Quarto. 61pp. Printed wrappers with photomecanically reproduced leaves. Spine with some wear and a bit of loss at the ends, wrappers toned and with some foxing, two pages with some offsetting but still easily legible, lower corner gently bumped, very good.

An unattributed "over-all picture of the attack upon the Federal Republic of Germany which is being launched from the Soviet Sector of Berlin." Chapters include "The communist propaganda campaign," "Attacks against youth organizations and labor unions," "Attacks in the field of culture," "Exploitation of the desire for reunification," and "Efforts to paralyze the defense morale of the free world." A section is dedicated to Polish, Czech, Rumanian, Hungarian, and Bulgarian intelligence services. Seven pages are dedicated to East Berlin "as a center for the recruitment for agents." The chapter before the conclusion discusses other criminal undertakings of the East Berlin intelligence services including forgery, burglary as a means of obtaining personal data, planned murders, forcible abductions, and sabotage.

Lending the report a personal touch, pp.50-54 lists 49 cover installations of Soviet Zone intelligence agencies known to be recruiting West German citizens for intelligence missions, often by first luring them to East Berlin with promises of legitimate work. Some are businesses, some are individuals, and addresses are given for each.

*OCLC* locates three copies of this English translation (11596819). Interestingly, the entry states that it is based on *Östliche Untergrundarbeit gegen Westberlin (Eastern Underground Work Against Berlin)*, issued in West Berlin by the Landesamt für Verfassungsschutz (State Office for the Protection of the Constitution), likely also in 1959. We have also found reference to another German edition sharing the German title noted in *OCLC*, published in Berlin in 1959 by Wilmersdorf, a memorandum from the Secretary of the Interior. We can't be certain the extent to which this edition in English conforms or differs (for example, in publishing personal information about 49 known East Berlin intelligence agents) from the German title referenced in *OCLC*.

A fascinating and rare artifact of Cold War espionage.
