"Petrella was one of the last composers of the old Neapolitan tradition. ... As one of the most performed composers of the generation between Donizetti and Puccini, Petrella has a distinctive place in the history of Italian opera … [He] treats this tenuous plot with great vivacity and humour ... His score is famous for its extensive use of ‘parlanti’ (vocal declamation over orchestral music) ... Though sometimes despised by the critics, Petrella's most successful operas remained in the repertory of smaller Italian opera houses up to the time of World War I. As one of the most performed composers of the generation between Donizetti and Puccini, Petrella has a distinctive place in the history of Italian opera." Michael Rose in Grove Dictionary of Opera.
