Julien Offroy de la Mettrie's tribute to Boerhaave's work, translated into French with his additions. Though de la Mettrie is not credited on the title page, which merely reads 'Traduits en Francois par ***,' his name appears after the Epitre Dedicatoire. Herman Boerhaave is widely regarded as the founder of the modern academic hospital, and clinical teaching in general, and is therefore sometimes called 'the father of physiology.' He is also notable as the first to use thermometers for clinical purposes.
