Inscribed to artist Robert Osborn and his wife Eloide who started the traveling exhibition program at MOMA "To Eloide and Robert Osborn with best wishes William Valentiner April 10,1944". German-born Valentiner founded two art journals, Art in America (along with Frederic Fairchild Sherman, publisher of this book) and Art Quarterly and served as curator of decorative arts at the New York Metroplitan Museum. co-dreictor of LA County Museum, director of the Detroit Museum, the North Carolina Museum of Art and the Getty in LA. The book is dedicated to Eleanor and Edsel Ford, who were patrons of the Detroit Museum at which Valentiner was director when this book was published. At the Detroit Museum, Valentiner Detroit Institute of Art in Michigan, from 1924 to 1945. Valentiner commissioned Mexican artist Diego Rivera to create a 27-panel mural series about Detroit industry for an interior court of the museum, and gained the patronage of Edsel Ford for the project. Near fine copy in original glassine which is partially tattered. Scarce.
