Short 8vo, green cloth, stamped in gilt and silver, 86pp, each page with red border, many decorated capitals and vignettes throughout text. Covers moderately worn, more so at spine ends, leaves lightly foxed. Rev. Berkemeier (1855-1924), an American Lutheran, was the Director of Wartburg Orphanage, Mount Vernon, NY, which started right after the Civil War. Rev, Berkemeier headed the orphanage from 1899 until his death. During World War I, Berkemeier became active in Friends of Peace, a pro-German group that lobbied against American involvement in the war, especially the prospect of a military alliance between the U.S. and the U.K.
