By Stephen J. Field | George C. Gorman
Privately Published, 1893. Second Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good binding. 8vo.; in the publisher's blue cloth; Printed for a few friends, NOT PUBLISHED.~~Second, but still scarce, edition of Associate Supreme Court Justice Field's memoirs of his "early days" in California. This is the first edition to included the account by Judge Gorham of the attempted assassination of Field by former Associate on the California Supreme Court David Terry. With paper inscribed "Compliments of Mr. Justice Field" pasted to the title page (note, we do not believe that this is Fields' signature -- probably the hand of a clerk or secretary). ~~Field was appointed by President Lincoln to the Supreme Court in 1863; he had gone to California during the Gold Rush years and while there his legal career took off. He had a pretty wild time in California, and this account depicts his legal life and adventures with vivacity and color. Pretty amazing stuff. (Howes F117; Graff 1316; Cowan 209). Very Good binding.
