By Jackson, Helen (H.H.)
Boston: Roberts Brothers, 1886. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. Illustrated in water colors by Alice A. Stewart. Limited to 100 copies signed by Stewart. About Near Fine. Quarter vellum, green buckram on the boards with gilt lettering and designs, some toning and light rubbing to the edges, bumps to the corners. Square and firmly bound with a gilt top edge, moire endpapers, a small circular shadow near the top of the pages through 19. A remarkably clean copy of Jackson's account of the beauty of Colorado flowers that was originally published in Bits of Travel at Home. According to Stewart's acknowledgement, Jackson approached her about illustrating this separate edition. Stewart writes, "It has been somewhat a labor of love to try to express in form and color what one, who had such a nice appreciation of Colorado flowers, has expressed so eloquently in words." Unfortunately, Jackson died of cancer before the book was published, leading Stewart to close her acknowledgement, "If I shall have done aught to add to the interest in what she has written, by my sketches, it is a grateful tribute which it will be a pleasure to me to pay to her memory.
