Boards worn along edges with brief exposure, corners bumped, and gilt at spine dulled. Cracked at hinges, some with signed of attempted tape repair, and exposed intermittently at gutters, but overall bindings holding. Some smudging to pages and slight chipping along fore-edge, with newsprint article about Kay attached to first page of Introductory Note in first volume with some offsetting, but overall text and plates clear and legible.
Kay's popular record of 18th century Scottish life, originally published posthumously in 1838 in two quarto volumes by Hugh Paton. Includes such highlights as sketches of Thomas Jefferson and Adam Smith, a group of aeronauts, and a portrait of marriage that can be viewed right side up or upside down.
