Scott & Welch Architects. Ephemera. Very good. Two original ink drawings on vellum. Approx. 16 x 30 1/2". Some hand coloration. The sketches are lightly creased, and have a few small spots. Sketch #6 depicts the North Elevation. Sketch #11 shows One-Half Elevation North Entrance; Section- West Stair Hall & Entrance; Plan- N. & W. Entrance & Stair Hall; Detail- Newels & Balustrade.
In her article for The Utah Historical Quarterly (Vol. 59, No. 2), Elizabeth Egleston points out that the work of Scott & Welch can be found throughout Salt Lake City and a number of small communities in Utah, however not much has been written about them. They are most known for the designs of South High School and the Salt Lake Masonic Temple. Although their firm specialized in educational structures, it also designed a wealth of other building types, including worker's housing, warehouses, and commercial buildings. Egleston states in her article, "The architects often incorporated unique and individual expression in their commissions. Carl Scott and George Welch left an indelible impression on the built environment of Utah and are worthy of study because their commissions document several themes in the state's development, including educational trends, the Great Depression, and the importance of New Deal programs in Utah.
