Founded in 1826 by five physicians who resigned from the College of Physicians and Surgeons, the New York legislature refused to allow the College to grant degrees and by 1830 the Medical College folded. In his discourse, the earliest publication of the College, Hosack sets out the aims and methods of the new school, as well as giving a detailed history of medical instruction in New York with biographies of the early professors.
