Jaffe, who was born in the Lower East Side in New York, became a well-known character actor on the strength of his performance in Josef von Sternberg's "The Scarlet Empress" (1934). He would go on to work with a number of prominent Hollywood directors, most notably in "Gunga Din" (1939), "The Asphalt Jungle" (1950, for which he would be nominated for an Academy Award), and "Ben-Hur" (1959).
