On September 11, 1857, the Fancher-Baker Party of overland trail immigrants heading to California from Arkansas were ambushed and betrayed by Mormons in Southern Utah, with the assistance of some Paiute Indians, leading to the worst massacre of Americans by Americans in the 19th century. 120 men, women and children were brutally murdered.
