From Lawrence County Memoirs.com: “Leopoldo ‘Paul’ Fazzoni (1868-1940), who arrived in New Castle, Pa., in 1886 was the first man to set up a fireworks operation in New Castle. He initially worked in a local mill, saved his money, and honed his fireworks assembly techniques. It is believed sometime in about 1892, when he was 24 years old, he started manufacturing his own fireworks and putting on public demonstrations. At least one brother, either Pasquale or Guiseppe, assisted him. The small enterprise became known as the Fazzoni Brothers Fireworks Manufacturing Company. Fazzoni is known to have set up several displays of fireworks at the park during the summer of 1897.”
An article in "The New Castle Tribune" on July 5, 1910 (found in the book, “The Glorious Fourth of July” by Diane Arkins), described a fireworks show by the Fazzoni company. It appears that the fireworks described in the article are on this $500 (or $400 as someone pencilled in?) price list. "From the moment the first set piece glowed in 'welcome' till the words of fire said 'Good Night,' the display was fast and furious…The next set piece was a huge American eagle in many colors. The crowd cheered lustily as the national emblem lighted up the scene....Some of the other set pieces included the following: Search light wheel, 20 feet across, with seven wheels revolving in almost as many colors; two snakes fighting; American Rose, revolving, 12 feet across....The fireworks … were ample evidence that the manufacturers understand their business. Not only was the display magnificent but it was put off in a way that pleased the crowd. There were no long waits between acts. There was something doing all the time. The fireworks on the Boyles field, July 4, 1910, will go down in history as one of the big events of New Castle’s best celebration.”.
