The Marriage Law Reform Association was incorporated in 1851 as opposition to Lord Lyndhurst's Marriage Act of 1835 grew. The Act prohibited the marriage of a widower to his deceased wife's sister, reflecting Victorian anxieties around incest, family purity and the role of the church. Despite the Association's long campaign, the Act was not repealed until the Deceased Wife's Sister's Marriage Act in 1907.
