New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1923. Cloth. Very Good. Maynard Dixon. The 1923 1st edition of this uncommon collection of Native American-themed stories, written and illustrated by the great Maynard Dixon (1875-1946), one of the towering artists of the American West. Includes 8 full-page illustrations by Dixon in rich color and additional smaller black-and-white flourishes of his (mostly at chapter headings). Solid and VG- to VG in its orange/yellow cloth, with light soiling to the rear panel and along the spine. Former owner bookplate at the front pastedown, very light foxing to the preliminaries. A former owner (almost certainly a talented child) has very skillfully and carefully crayoned in a number of the small black-and-white boxed illustrations. Nonetheless, a solid, presentable copy of this scarce Maynard Dixon vehicle, a highspot in early 20th century Native American juvenalia.
