London: Serpent's Tail. Near Fine. 2006. First Edition Thus. Softcover. [a tight clean book, with a couple of pages very slightly scrunched at fore-edge, and a tiny bump/bend at bottom right corner of front cover]. Trade PB In addition to the novel "Black Friday," originally published in 1954, this volume also collects a dozen of Goodis's magazine stories (all but one from various pulps), dating from 1942 to 1958. Edited, with an Introduction, by Adrian Wooton; also includes a 2-page biography of the writer (in chronology form), and an extensive bibliography of his pulp-magazine stories -- both those credited under his own name, and under four different pseudonyms. "Black Friday" itself was adapted for the 1972 French film LA COURSE DU LIÈVRE À TRAVERS LES CHAMPS (released in the U.S. as AND HOPE TO DIE). A surprisingly scarce volume; not to be confused with the Vintage/Black Lizard (U.S.) printings of this title, which lack the biographical and bibliographical extra content present here, elements which make this an essential volume for the Goodis aficionado. [NOTE also that the cover title of this volume ("and Selected Stories") differs from the correct (title-page) title ("and Other Stories"). And also that a number of other sellers of the Vintage/Black Lizard editions incorrectly attach the "and Selected Stories" subtitle to their books, an error they could avoid by simply looking at the books instead of taking some computer's word for it.] .
