[No place (United States): no publisher, 1870. Unbound. Near Fine. Albumen print carte de visite photograph. Measuring 3 3/4 by 2 3/8 inches, on unprinted cardstock mount, measuring 4 1/8 by 2 1/2 inches.
The image is fine, fresh and bright, with excellent contrast. Image depicts a caricatured image of an African-American congregation and preacher. The photograph, captioned: "Trubble in de Church," reproduces a lithograph, depicting an African-American preacher, standing at a pulpit, preaching to a large gathering of African-American parishioners, with the printed text of the preacher's sermon in an exaggerated black dialect stating: "An furdermore you profane and ungodly sinner, de day ob judgement am bound to cum jis as sure as yer born. Den look out for when it does you'l hab to- " Meanwhile, a parrot, seen perched behind the preacher interrupts him and states]: "Pull down your vest." The African-American parishioners, who cannot see the parrot, appear to be looking around the room in confusion. Apparently this caricature depiction of an African-American preacher was a popular image of the time, published in multiple formats, including a lithograph, stereo view, cabinet card, and (as here) a carte-de-visite. The carte-de-visite image is unrecorded by *OCLC*, which does note a single holding of the stereoview issue, and a single holding of the lithograph issue.
