While drunk and disorderly, Cornwallis and a friend harassed and threatened a sentry. After failing to ruffle the sentry despite threats ranging from the physical to the sexual, their attention turned to some boys passing by. The friend attacked one of them and broke the boy's neck. Cornwallis was tried as an accomplice and acquitted, although several jury members voted to convict him of manslaughter.
