London & Edinburgh: William and Robert Chambers, N.d. [1858]. Second edition (revised). Two quarto volumes (26cm). Publisher's embossed cloth, titled in gilt, with gilt center medallion to each front board; xx,812; xv,816pp; illus. A straight, clean and well-preserved set, slightly foxed on text block edges and prelims, faint and scattered foxing to text; solidly Very Good. With the engraved bookplate of Robert M'Millan, Palgowan, inside each front cover.

The Cyclopaedia originally appeared in 1843. This edition is undated, but is apparently an early or first impression of the first revision of 1858: "It appeared to the Publishers...that after the lapse of fifteen years, during which literature and literary information had so greatly increased, a revision of the work had become necessary. They accordingly placed it, for this purpose, under the charge of Mr Robert carruthers, of Inverness; and it is now presented to the public in a thoroughly revised, and, as they believe, considerably improved form, with such an extension as was requisite towards the completion of the original plan" (from the Preface to v.1).
