By Tate, Allen
New York: The Swallow Press and William Morrow & Company, Publishers, 1948. First edition. xviii, 379pp. 8vo. Orange cloth. Spine lightly faded, with one-inch tan stain at base of spine, bottom and fore-edge have very faint tide mark, else a very good copy, with text quite fresh and clean. First edition. xviii, 379pp. 8vo. Warmly inscribed by Allen Tate, to publisher Harry Duncan, on the front flyleaf, in year of publication: "For Harry [Duncan], with gratitude and love, Allen. September 14, 1948" [Harry Duncan, of The Cummington Press, published a number of books by Allen Tate (spanning four decades), including 'Sonnets at Christmas,' 'Fragment of a meditation: 1928,' etc.]. Harry Duncan published Robert Lowell's first book in 1947, after meeting him through Allen Tate, his godfather (the three men were converts to Roman Catholicism). A nice association copy.
