As "a painter of repute" himself, so goes the jacket blurb, the author was "well acquainted with modern artistic life -- both pseudo and real." Gibbs was quite the prolific author, cranking out about a book a year between 1901 and his death in 1942; even before that, he had already established himself as a successful magazine illustrator, and after his writing career took off he continued to do illustrations for newspapers, magazines, and books (his own and others'), as well as developing his artistic talents as a noted portraitist and muralist. .
