A grouping of nine (9) printed handbills promoting concerts and public rehearsals given by the St. Cecilia Society of Philadelphia between 1825 and 1827. Each handbill measures approx. 7.5" by 5.5". Typographical borders. Early ink inscription dating handbills to verso, all in same hand. Predominantly found in the southern US, these societies were originally formed as musical organizations, many with subscriptions. In Charleston SC founded in 1762, but in 1822 converted strictly to a social organization and became the grande dame of the debutante balls.
